Travel at Coorg!

If you’re the one who like to mingle with the nature, romance in the scenic mountains, feel the tingle of the cool and gentle breeze, watch leaves flutter in dance-like movements and hear the sounds of birds filling the air, then Coorg is just the place for you.!

Situated on the Western ghats of South India, Kodagu is otherwise it is called by, a tiniest district it is, by covering 4100 Sq Km of land surface. The capital of Coorg is Madikeri, formerly called Mercara, is also known as the Scotland of India. Its enchanting beauty with lush green valleys, misty hills, breath taking views makes you to rethink of leaving this incomporable heaven.

It was 4pm, Friday, July 10, 2009. We five people left our office on 3 bikes (Yamaha, Apache, Thunderbird) for our weekend in Coorg. It was little cloudy that just reminded us to wear jacket once we left the office. It was almost an hour to stop hearing all hertz of noises and catch Mysore highway.

None of us had versed on all the places we decided to visit, so we decided to stay at Mysore for the friday night. On the way, we stopped at MTR Maddur restaurant for dinner. Maddur is popular on its traditional eatable "Vada". Having tasted few pieces along with Kaduppu (form of Idli, a south indian traditional dish for breakfast/dinner) at around 7.30 PM, we reached Mysore at around 9.30 PM, with a short relaxation break somewhere just after Mandya.

We left Mysore the next day, on early morning around 7AM. Having refueled our bikes we circuited into Madikkery highway, by keeping the driving at 80 Kmph (avg). It was little sunny in someplaces with which we could dry our wet clothes as it was raining at most of other places. South-west monsoon has just started perhaps!

Manchanabele!

Manchanabele is a small delightful reservoir, built at the confluence of rivers Arkavathi and Kumudvathi. It is just at 10 Kms from a well known weekend spot "Big Banyan Tree" in Bangalore. All the sides of dam are surrounded by hills. Built for irrigation purpose, this dam also serves water to Magadi town.

It is more exhilarating to see Savandurga at the backdrop. "Wow" the word you would say, when you are just entering the ridge!

As this place is with in 50 Kms from Bangalore, we decided not to throttle more to exhaust on recently laid, winding roads that connects to this dam, but enjoy the nature. It was cloudy and windy weather to start with, during the pre-monsoon morning!

Just before the dam, the road forks into two, one to the dam and other running across the catchment land. Water at the catchment side was less enough to park our bikes at the shore. It was absolutely beckoning when the water was rippling and reflecting at Savandurga! At first sight, the warm water tempts us for the swimming, but it is highly dangerous as the depth is not defined clearly.

Unfailingly we had photo sessions for few minutes, at different expressions, exposures! We just missed to bring groceries for cookery!

So what are you waiting for? Gear up to this magnificent Manchanabelle soon
and have a pleasant time here!

Achalu betta! a hillock near kanakapura ..

After feeling dumped with modem week and fully exhausted by machinery works, we decided to relax some time in our countryside, but not too far from the city, and to adjust with in a day. And it was "Achallu betta", that we decided and can be spotted just after 15 Kms from Kanakapura! Achalu is the village name and betta in kannada means 'hill'!

One aspect you would like here is the beauty and amazing landscape all along the way and you will astonish at the gift of our peaceful country side.

Having decided on the place, we five people on three bikes geared up for the trip and the time we crossed out the city was 7.30 AM. Though the monsoon has started raining more and more every day at this time, it was clear and warm weather to start with.
After picking our fifth man on the Mysore road, we decided to take off the city through NICE express highway. It was awesome to have just few min ride on this road, so as to connect on Kanakapura road, but whole ride was overwhelming us with an orchard full of coconut trees.

We could reach the foothill of our target in another half an hour, following a little breakfast at our
ever-visiting hotel in Kanakapura, around 9 AM. We could park our bikes at the free of cost in front of farmer house and started the trek with the navigation by electric poles, wired to the top of hillock!
With my little fictious workout on gathering informations about this place, it would take 2 hours atleast to climb up and we too realized it, with our hearts pumping at the peak. It was calm, clean breeze that we could get while we sat in middle of the trek under a tree.

Path is very straight forward if you follow the electric poles since the beginning, yet we could not find proper place to start, having seen none around us to help. It took the same time as we expected and at last reached the top. Our expectation has finally brought us to amaze at the wide view on green farms, tiled houses, small ponds, etc. There is a small Nandi at the top facing the village.

Also, a Muneeswara temple and small pond are there. People around here seems to celebrate Sankaranthi on this hillock, but nothing else this place seems to have specially in the history of it. We could spend nice team under a tree discussing about our friends, life, college stories, etc and etc ... I could really enjoy the fun-filled bike trip, but the climax of the trip was on rain-filled way, back to home.

Useful Informations

Distance: 80 Kms from Bangalore, 15 Kms from Kanakapura.
Nearby Town: Kanakapura
Season: Anytime! Rainy season is not to good for the trek!

Chunchi Falls! A cascade of Arkavathi.

Like our unusual plans all of sudden striking out for weekend, this time it was flashing at "Chunchi Falls".

It was 6:30 AM and we all set target to visit one of the beautiful spots, all along the way gracious Cauvery traverses and it was "Chunchi falls". If you plan for a well known picnic spot "Mekaedatu", don't ever miss to visit Chunchi !!!

Tightening the grip on throttles to rush more fuel and air into the engine, honking loud on passers off the road, heating the tires with stretches on more bends and turns, our day hangout started in its own way. With a little breakfast at Kanakapura, 50 kms from Bangalore, we again geared up further to our target.

In another 30 Kms, a yellow-black route board flashed on us, greeting to "Chunchi falls" at 6 Kms off the branch, just 12 Kms before "Mekaedatu" .We were completely blank about this falls on how it is going to be, even I am sure most of the people would have just heard about there is Chunchi falls, if they have made a trip only to Mekadatu, or even not!.

Not only the engine heated up, we too were slowly getting warmed, then heated in just few hours ahead for the noon. So with out much thinking, we rode ahead to see Chunchi.

Just by a quick look on our curious faces, a small boy offered a help to locate the falls, after we stopped our bikes under a tree, which is known to be parking place for the spot! I hope it is his regular duty to make money by tiring us in this blank visit, but his guidance is indeed required that we realized in few minutes!

We passed many boulders, bushes and bald rocks, at last arrived at the place where cauvery has just crafted the beauty of indefinite imaginations all along the way. You can never see it at the first sight after you just stopped at the top of the terrain.

Having an anxious walk on this slippery rocks and few second stops to relax, in between It finally excited us to breathe along this marvelous creation by Arkavathi.

There is confluence of Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers, but unlike Sangamam, there was not much left over plastics, due to less picnickers and quiet! There was not much gushing noise as it was summer and of less water.

It is highly dangerous on getting down the rocks though you can definitely tingled by these sculptors, but unless you remember the way to be back, you would get lost! There were no straight paths rather only turns, bends, and slopes to check if you are really brave enough!

It was absolutely calm finally, which even you wont get on any meditations, that kind of peacefulness.

It is a trip that requires no planning, no delibrate time but to be energetic to climb down and up the rocks, willingness to heartedly breathe on her showers!

Trek to Kodachadri!

Kodachadri! An amazing, exquisite scenic hill station standing out on western ghats of India. It is one of the great retreats for those looking for solitude. If you wish to trek on unspoilt mountain terrain, then it is one of the best choices on your table.

About 1343m above sea level Kodachadri Hill is the home to many endangered species of both the animal and plant kingdom, it is every trekker's dream to trek along the mountain tracks, and me too!

Following a lengthy discussion on whether reaching this marvelous place by our bikes, we wrapped up quickly at the end, to go by Tavera with seven people strength.

At the end of trip, we realized we had just missed an awesome pleasant ride to sport on the hands of rainy forests!

We geared up having wasted 2 hours with unavoidable traffic to come out of noisy city life, in midnight. We never expected that we need to slip another 3 hours for vehicle breakdown as rear tyre had got punctured near Shimoga, in early morning!

With quick breakfast and light refreshments, we finally reached 'Sampekatte' village which is foot hill for Kodachadri, through Nagodi. We got very tasty home food there, to be enough for charging up another 5 hours trek.

Beginnig the trek in noon, is odd , but we could not delay anymore, so as to reach the top before sun sets.

For first few kms, we could walk in less time with less energy burnt, though we
needed few mins
halt in between, as it was noon!

It is quite easy to sort out the short routes to cut walking over all the way. Just following known foot prints would suffice, but it was thrilling us in second short cut, as we could not chase the muddy road or electric poll which used to guard us, missing all of sudden. Keeping deep breathe and walking hard much more, we had been able to spot our companion road, at the end of short cut (mysterious!).

After spending 2 hours trek with 20 min (overall!) pit stop in between, one another gang roaring with bike surprised us that we had just crossed 3 kms, on our confirmation!.

It stumbled us initially as we felt short cuts cheated us, but not so, when few of us split up still believing on shortcuts.

Yes! they could reach the shelter on the way (just 2 kms before the kodachadri guest house) in a 30 min less time than us.

It was an amazing spot and we never thought that we will get tasty butter milk from a man whose main business is to serve foods for the trekkers and devotees. It is less turnover for this man, but he lives peacefully which is what every one wishes
for!.
First hill behind the shelter as you see in photo, is where guest house is located. It is 2 kms from here.

We finally reached the guest house around 5 PM. This guest house is being maintained by PWD. So with out much luxury expectations to stay, we could finally got a Hall room to put down our luggages and sleep. It was around 50 Rs per person being charged for per day accommodation in Hall. Very tired we all were! After having a cup of tea, we refreshed to see sunset!

It was a scenic event, ever first time in my life I see sunset from top of hill. There is one view point which takes you to see sunset completely but we could not make it out as we were burst out completely on lengthy trek.

At this place, we stand almost over the clouds. You can see clouds moving behind
the tree!

Waking up early in morning was not difficult one there, as it was moderately cold!
From guest house, having walked a km up the hill, we could spot a zone to sit and
watch sunrise comfortably!. It was a magnificent scene, when sun light was mildly spreading across the whole terrain, we felt like sitting on top of islands!

We could spot a small falls (even in this summer) with few meters walk from guest house. It is dangerous to visit this
place in late evening as animals do visit it for water, in
summer! It was an end of the trip that we had very good
time in the week ends!
As this terrain is leech kingdom, be prepared if you are
tripping in winter/monsoon time.
